Why should I consider Prekindergarten for my child?

When your child enters the free Prekindergarten programming offered by the Rochester City School District, they become a part of a learning community that nurtures individual growth and provides a strong academic and social-emotional foundation for lifelong learning.

Why should I enroll my child in an RCSD PreK program?

RCSD PreK offers a wide variety of convenient, high-quality program options to choose from for your child's PreK experience. Many of our RCSD school sites have PreK classrooms, and we partner with several community-based centers, as well. PreK is an educational program taught by a NYS-certified or credentialed teacher that will lay the foundation of success for your child's future. Children who participate in quality early childhood programs typically...

  • Learn socialization skills through group activities;

  • Experience reading and writing readiness activities;

  • Are better prepared for school success;

  • Are more likely to attain higher levels of education.

What should I expect?

PreK programming offers a robust and enriching educational experience for children that includes the following components...

  • Your child will receive 6 hours of an intentionally planned PreK program.

  • All of Rochester's PreK classrooms utilize the HighScope Curriculum. Click here for more information about our current PreK curriculum.

  • The curriculum is aligned to NYS Next Generation Learning Standards and ensures continuity with elementary grades.

  • Activities are learner-centered and promote each child's individual growth and development.

  • All of our PreK classrooms are staffed with a NYS-Certified teacher.
